The myth has always been that Daniel Louis Armstrong was born on July 4, 1900. However, vast research has uncovered his baptism papers at the Sacred knocker of Jesus Church in impertinent Orleans stating that he was actually born on August 4, 1901. Armstrong was born in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans, and his parents were illogical when he was very young. His father worked in a factory, and his set out was a cleaning woman. When Oliver left for boodle in 1918, he placed Armstrong in his chair with a band directed by trombonist Kid Ory. Armstrong stayed with Ory for eighteen months and then joined Fate Marables orchestra on a manuscript steamboat in 1920.
In 1922 Oliver sent for Armstrong to join him in Chicago at the Lincoln Gardens. Armstrong married Lil Hardin (the second of four wives) in 1924. She was the pianist with Oliver, but she encouraged Armstrong to organize his own band. However, Armstrong always remained grateful to Oliver and considered him his idol.
