A Rose for Emily is a wretched narrative written by William Faulkner. His Southern gothic elan brings about the grotesque and gloomy setting of goal, mental illness, and outlet of love. Faulkners use of time and symbolism bring out Emilys unconscious motives of repressed wounds and guilty desire.
Faulkner uses time to speciate Emilys fabrication by starting with her death and move with flashbacks of her life. As the reader comes to the end of the story, they realize that Emilys funeral is a flashback and the aldermen have come to reveal the dreadful secret that Emily has unploughed in her house for all these years. Emily stays stuck in her prehistorical as the years go by and the townspeople she lives in begins to experience a great deal of tack. Faulkner introduces both away(a) and present in this short narrative and shows how they both deflect each other. Faulkners A Rose for Emily, is a story which demonstrates that time moves forward but memories of the past stays in the mind, alive and repressed no matter how things change and no matter how much people change. Emily stays committed to the past as time moves forward. She held with her the memory of her fathers death as he was the only thing for her to hold on to.



Her father was the only love she felt, the only love she knew. Her repression of her outrage led her mind to believe that her father was indeed not dead. She told them that her father was not dead. (Faulkner, 1931). Emily did this for three days while the ministers and doctors of the town finally persuaded her into disposing the body. The townspeople began to see very little of Emily. safekeeping herself locked up in her home and creating the bridal chamber for her devotee Homer Barron was an extreme attempt to stop time and change and to repress the love she never really got to know. Emily searched for unconditional and unremitting love.
